Reps Seek Stronger Fiscal Governance

The Chairman of the House of Representatives Public Accounts Committee (PAC), Hon. Bamidele Salam, has stressed the urgent need to strengthen Nigeria’s fiscal governance systems, warning that the nation continues to grapple with serious challenges in public financial management.
Speaking at a pre-conference press briefing ahead of the National Conference on Public Accounts and Fiscal Governance (NCPAFG), scheduled for July 6–10, 2025, in Abuja, Hon. Salam noted that financial mismanagement persists across all tiers of government. He called for coordinated interventions by the executive, legislature, and judiciary to address the issue effectively.
Hon. Salam acknowledged that while some progress had been made through ongoing reforms, significant work remains to close longstanding gaps in transparency and accountability within the public expenditure system, noting that he would be surprised if anyone claimed to be satisfied with the current level of transparency.
The PAC chairman also underscored the need for more robust financial oversight systems, citing the complexity of Nigeria’s financial framework and its multiple streams of funding. He maintained that strong mechanisms must be put in place to prevent infractions and guarantee accountability.
Salam reaffirmed the committee’s commitment to working closely with stakeholders to implement lasting reforms aimed at safeguarding public resources and restoring public confidence in the government’s financial management processes. The upcoming conference forms a central pillar of the 10th Assembly’s Legislative Agenda and is designed to reposition the country’s public financial management structures for greater integrity, efficiency, and transparency.
